Simcity - Teaching Local Goverments And Civics

I’ve been using the game SimCity 3000 with my grade 6 class to enhance and compliment their local government unit in social studies. They have been learning all about decision making, balancing the wants and needs of citizens, lobby groups, and government responsibilities.

Government isn’t always the most dynamic unit, but SimCity brings it to life. The students get to make the decisions, build and maintain services, and respond to the questions and demands of citizens in their town. They get instant feedback for the decisions that they implement as they see how citizens react to spending and policy decisions.

A simulation environment allows students to experiment and try with different approaches and strategies. They immediately see the consequences of their decisions or lack of decision making. The students were enthralled by being able to be in control of a government and make choices. One student was even fired as the mayor – others flourished and had statues built in their honour.

I used an older version of the game. Simcity 3000 is a 1999 release. The newer versions of SimCity 4, SimCity Societies and SimCity Creator for the DS and various other consoles are also fantastic games. I choose the earlier version so the students could focus on developing services and responding to the needs to citizens without all of the “extras.” The more complex the game, the more it can get away from the heart of the decision making process, which was what I want the students in my classroom to experience.

Watch the students talk about what they are doing and see some of the problems they have to solve.

View video here Source Here

Why News here has been foggy

Well, It's been a few busy days in the newssphere, mainly about The Sims 3 ambitions, The reason why we haven't been able to post the news on the day it arrives is cause were much too busy with Simillionv7, our sites new version, as you might and should know this is just the temporary redirect for Simillion.com, and by some time this or hopefully next week we will have the new look and site on Simillion.com deployed.

In the meantime we've been filled in problems, such as my coputer, had to be put in the fix due to a fan problem :( and all those other useless problems that have slowed down and haulted operation news and upkeep of this site. sorry for the inconvenience... see on Simillion.com *v7* at these times:

Plan: Finish before The End of May

Estimated time till finish of the theme: May 10 to May 12 :)

If things go to plan: We will be back up before May15th :D

If things don't go to plan: We may be seeing a delay all the way to May 20th :(

Ambitions: New Review, Tons of Screens and New Wallpapers

In our next post we'll explain whats going on with the lag here but in the meantime, there's been some huge tumbling of news comming from all directions of the sim-world...

In Ambitions, Your sims can do the laundry :) (oh no I meant their laundry not yours :()

Hey guys – there will be a laundry system in ambitions! It will be optional, if you don’t want to bother with it, you don’thave to, but if you want to add some extra good moodlets andentertainment, you can choose to purchase a washer and dryer for yourSims. AND the high end dryer might have a special surprise if you watchit closely of course if you really hate laundry, work on your inventing skill and then detonate your washer.

Source:SimTimes

Ambitions: New Screens and Hands on Review from IGN

Loyal Sims 3 fans who aren’t interested in professionscan still expect a lot of changes to their game, as EA is planning ahuge free update to go along with the expansion’s release. The first ofthe major new pieces of content is the ability for players to givetheir Sims tattoos. Without Ambitions players will only have access toa limited set of Tattoos, but they can still apply them to theircharacters and other Sims. Even with Ambitions the art seems fairlylimited at first, but the range of what you can do with the images isimpressive. Through resizing and layering players can create somefairly realistic and genuinely good-looking body art.

Other new features free to all players with the release of Ambitionsare self-employment, more options with customizing a neighborhood, andincreased build/buy features. Sims who have the proper skills likephotography or painting can register as self employed, making it soplayers who are aspiring to a life goal that links to the skill will nolonger have to live with that pesky “unemployed” title. The otherneighborhood and build/buy features are pretty specific sounding to theuninitiated Sims player, but trust me when I say that players who loveto customize the minutia of their town and buildings have a lot to lookforward to with Ambitions whether they buy it or not.

The biggest part of the free update, though, is the Create a Patterntool. This tool will allow players to import pictures or other graphicsand modify them in order to make textures for walls or other items(though this will not make tattoos). Using what seems like a very basicversion of Photoshop, players can change things like the color, brightness, or size of their pictures, with the ability to layer up tofive images on top of one another. It’s a fairly simple sounding tool, but it’s just another way EA’s allowing Sims 3 players to manipulatetheir surroundings to their liking.

Here are the new screens (one was removed due to not following our terms of attachments)

New Sims 3 Ambitions Wallpapers

|

Sims Slovenija - Sim Sous - Cuca Sims

IBM Building Simcity Runner Up

Tomorrow, at the IMPACT conference, IBM plans to unveil CityOne, a video game that plops you into the role of being a city planner, trying to solve the sorts of business and environmental problems that grip today's modern cities. The ultimate aim for this so-called "serious game" is to teach laypeople how to better cope with complex modern problems by showing them the forest of solutions that have to be brought to bear, ranging from technological wizardry like smart grids, to better IT, to smart environmental policy. (Presumably, the aide of IBM will come in handy somewhere down the road, given the company's investments in many of these technologies.)

The game's premise is based on the real world: Cities already consume 75% of the world's energy and cause 80% of its carbon emissions. And they're growing at a blistering pace: The world's urban population is expected to double by 2050. So cities have to grow smarter if they're to support the massive population migrations that are happening worldwide.

CityOne is much like Sim City, only the problems are scarily real, ranging among energy, water, banking, and retail. So, for example, one day you might get hit by a rapid increase in water usage due to population growth--while you're still losing 40% of your water supply to leaky pipes. (This is actually reality, in decrepit megalopolises such as Mumbai and Mexico City.) To fix that problem, you'll have to carefully install a real-time water management system. Or, to encourage growth in small-businesses, you'll have to set up an infrastructure of mobile payments, dynamic invoicing, and micro-lending.

Clear your Friday night schedule.

Nancy Pearson, an IBM vice president, says that the games let people "inherently comprehend...the potential business outcomes that can result." In other works, the meaning of saving the money (and the earth) through the power of IBM should become a lot clearer to you than it was through all those hazy branding campaigns.

Meanwhile, "serious gaming" is becoming the rage among a certain set of socially minded game designers. For more, check out this nifty TED talk by game designer Jane McGonigal about how to embed real-world problems in video games, so that solution-finding becomes viral.

More from Fast Company

Source: Simprograms

PocketGamer: Preview - Simcity Deluxe in Development

PocketGamer had the chance to see Simcity Deluxe in development and has presented what they had to say about their trip:

Having had a brief look at a near-finished build recently, this enhancement is most apparent in the game’s visuals. The familiar isometric viewpoint is sharper and more vibrant than before, with attractive touches such as shadows cast by clouds.

There’s also a hat-full of new animations to bring your city alive, such as aircraft buzzing around the skies. With the ability to enable disasters in Freeplay mode, we couldn’t resist asking if volcano activity inhibited this air travel at all. It seems it doesn’t, but EA is promising plenty of other neat features instead.

More From the Pocket

Source: InfiniteSims

Simcity Deluxe - Towering to Mobiles in May 12, 2010!

Simcity Deluxe (for mobile) has been planned to tower to stores and mobile phones in May 12, 2010. IntoMobile has presented this info on a new article:

The game is set to be released on May 12th and will most definitely hit all the major carriers’ decks within days (if not immediately).

Some additional plans and info:

here are two modes to play – Freeplay and Scenario mode. The former removes all the restrictions allowing you to go beyond the wildest dreams. On the other hand, in the Scenario mode, there are pre-defined goals such as reaching a certain population level. SimCity Deluxe also comes with a brand new help system, which assist you in getting around every function of the game. Simple press 1, 2 or 3 – and a large animated head will appear to give you all the details.

This would not have reached us without the help of InfiniteSims for the tip

EL33TONLINE - Sims 3 High End Loft Stuff Review

What’s more worrying is the amount of items included in this expansion: only one item of every type. Did you want new sofas? You get one, in a high end loft style. New televisions? You get one, in a high end loft style. All of the items could easily have been added to the Sims Shop rather than waste a CD. At least then you only buy the items that you feel are needed, or that you really like. Now you fill your hard drive with stuff that is ultimately pointless.

However, it is not all doom and gloom in this expansion. Of all the items, there is one that might have been worth the price of the expansion alone. An aquarium. It may sound unlikely that something as simple as an aquarium could be so useful, but allow me to explain. See one of the skills that your Sims can learn is fishing. Through trial and error, and reading fishing books, they learn how to choose the right bait for bigger and better examples of certain fish species. Some fish can be eaten, and some can be sent off to be mounted and hung on a wall. But your Sim can also desire to have an aquarium with all the greatest fish available. However, originally you only had fishbowls big enough to keep a single fish in each bowl and maintaining these fishbowls was utter tedium.

More the complaining here

EA wants your avatar! (actually no, they just want the good ones)

Finally something EA's doing right, I hated all those default avatars EA had, none of them wore formal clothes and brown hair (grrr). Anyways, EA's opening the position to get your avatar to be one of the default avatars and be featured (witch means your avatar will not be culled). I've added a few of my opinions (marked in orange) in the statement:

The time has come for us to jazz up those default avatar Sims. This is where you come in – would you like your Sim to be immortalized in the default avatar selection? [Can you garatee you won't steal us fans avatar?!]

Post a link to your Sims in this thread!

The more unique, the better. Remember, your Sims must follow the Exchange rules.

If you’re going to use Custom Content, please use CC that is your own.

If your Sim gets picked to be an avatar, we’ll feature it! [yeh, IF it gets picked]

Have fun and we look forward to seeing the Sims you will share with us! Good luck . [You think I'm having fun? racing to make a get my avatar picked since you started culling useless and undownloaded avatars?!]

EDIT:

Forgot to mention – you have until March 31 11:59pm PST. [What else have you FORGOTTEN to tell us? that You won't steal our avatars?!]

Bring in the formal high end freak avatars! yay

EA closes down EA Brazil

According to WorldSims, EA has closen down EA brazil, But this is old news, since EA had done this about 3 months ago (December 2009). This also meant that millions of fans and 40 employee's were laid off due to the closing of the studio.

Since before the studio closed down we haven't heard from SimVIP, its probably because he was part of the employee's there. Dimensao Sims (via twitter) even stated that the games might not be available (released) in brazil anymore, witch means bad news for Brazilians hoping to get a taste of the sims 3 high end loft stuff.

I feel really sad for the Brazilians, who won't be having any sim-tastic days no more :( I wish them good luck in finding a new game they can connect to.

The Sims 3 Hobbies & Professions is now The Sims 3 "Ambitions"?

Sims3Nieuws picked up on the fact that the outgrowing rumour of the second sims 3 EP, is actually renamed in the latest game release listings, to Ambitions. This is also the third confirmation of the EP, actually the 4th if you count the recent confirmation (or um, news) about EA asking SimsPlanet2 (the person who confirmed the rumour) to delete the article (of which he investigated Hobbies & Professions), witch pretty much in my opinion increases (and maybe even proves) that the rumour is real .

But note that the news is from a dutch site, witch most likely means that the pack could still be "The Sims 3 Hobbies & Professions", due to all the different names for EA games outside of the US witch could normally mean the game's name is only ambitions (google translated) in the Netherlands, but could still be Hobbies & Professions in the US
